World Cheapest Tablet PC Aakash Launched in India: Retail Version at Rs. 2999 Only

The lowest cost tablet in world launched here in India, made in India. This tablet called Aakash, developed by IIT Rajasthan and DataWind under the Human Resource ministry of India. The tablet launched by by minister Kapil Sibal, with a price tag of Rs 2,250 which only for student and a retail version will be launched in November at price of Rs 2,999 only.

Aakash/Ubislate Tablet

Though earlier talked the tablet Aakash will be selling for a price tag of $35 (around Rs. 1750) but later its declared at price of $45 (Rs. 2,200). The Aakash tablet has Android Froyo 2.2 operating system, 7 inch resistive touchscreen, WiFi and 3G (optional through data card) connectivity and a 366 MHz processor from Conexant. Tablet also features a HD video Co-Processor and graphic accelerator, 256 MB RAM and its weighs is 350 grams. A leather case also included with this tablet PC.

The retail commercial version to be launched in November by the UK-based manufacturing company Datawind which called Ubislate. The Ubislate tablet will be available for under Rs. 2,999 (MRP) including taxes with one year of warranty. The specification of Ubislate will be almost same but will have faster 600 MHz processor from ST Micro electronics.

The government has purchased 100,000 units of the Aakash tablet from Datawind and will be distribute these tablets across the country and 3,000 units each state. The tablet will only be available to post-secondary students. The first batch will comprise of 500 units of the 'Aakash' tablet, which will be given to students.

Other specifications of Aakash include video-conferencing capabilities, two USB ports and 32GB expandable memory support and 180 minutes of battery power. You can connect it to a data card for 3G or GPRS connectivity. Aakash has a 2 GB in built memory and comes along with a 2 GB MicroSD with support up to 32 GB card. This tablet has a browser called UBI Surfer, developed by DataWing and they claimed its 10 times faster than any other mobile browser. Nimbuzz also announced that the free calls and messaging application will come pre-loaded with the Aakash tablet
