Google Goggles for Android has received a significant update. You may recall that Goggles is an app which can help you search for images captured with mobile devices. The new version of the app (v 1.9) is available for download from Google play store. The updated app will be compatible with devices running on Android 2.2 and higher.

Google Goggles is basically an application that allows you to search by capturing an image. Users can point the camera at any object and the app will extract any available information on the object. The object can be a painting, landmark, barcodes, products etc. If Goggle finds the captured image in its database, it will display associated information on the object. An attractive feature of Google Goggles app is that it can translate a text in foreign language by taking its picture. This is especially useful for travelers who visit foreign locations.
Google Goggles is able to read texts in English, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Turkish and Portuguese. Google Goggles also allows users to add contacts by scanning business cards. Users can also scan text using OCR. In a previous update the app had enhanced its compatibility with Android based phones. The app automatically pairs itself with the phone camera and works efficiently in the background for extracting information.
New updates with the app
One of the most visible changes made with this update is that users do not need to enable their search history to make use of the ‘Search from camera’ feature. Object tracking in continuous mode is much more enhanced and faster. Users will also be able to scan a QR code with URL encoded. The app will display a thumbnail of the page and check if it is a malicious link. A more elaborate coverage of the barcodes is incorporated with the update. If Goggles fails to find an exact match for the search made, the app will search for similar products and list them.
