Global smartphone arena is flooded with a plethora of new handsets based on different operating systems. Moreover, on Monday, Microsoft and Google came up with their new OS platforms – Windows Phone 8 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, thereby, hinting that the new handsets running on these new platforms will be released starting November.

In September, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones, based on the newWindows Phone 8 OS. Both the smartphones are packed with groundbreaking features including NFC, wireless charging and glove friendly capacitive touchscreen.

However, there is another highly anticipated smartphone, which was unveiled lately – LG Nexus 4, which also comes with advanced specs and features like wireless charging, quad core processor and a new version of Android Jelly Bean.

As far as the availability of these handsets in the Indian market is concerned, both the smartphones will be released by the end of November 2012. However, there is no official word on the specific release dates and pricings.

But this can be surely anticipated, that when launched in the market Lumia 920 and Nexus 4 will pose a stiff competition against each other. Lets see how will they counter each other depending on the specifications comparison.

Dimensions & Weight: Lumia 920 boasts a dimension of 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm and a weight of around 185 grams while Nexus 4 carries a dimension of 134.2 x 68.6 x 9.1 mm and weighs in at 139 grams.

Display: Lumia 920 sports a 4.5 inch PureMotion HD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 768 pixel resolution.

In comparison, Nexus 4 houses a larger 4.7-inch IPS display that has a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels.

Processor: In terms of processor, Lumia 920 is powered by a dual core 1.5GHz QualcommSnapdragon processor and Nexus 4 is packed with a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

Operating System: This is the most contradicting aspect of the comparison as Lumia 920 is a Windows Phone 8 based smartphone and Nexus 4 is an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean based handset.

Windows Phone 8 has improved features like dynamic Live Tile Information, social network integration in the People hub, Skydrive and Office 365 documents synchronization, Facebook-events integrated calendar, visual voicemail, threaded email conversations support and many more.

On the other hand, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean comes with new features including Photo Sphere camera, Gesture Typing, Miracast, DayDream, improved notifications, quick settings, support to multiple user accounts, improved Google Now and more.

Camera: On the camera optics front, Lumia 920 packs an 8.7MP rear camera with dual LED flash, autofocus and PureView branding and a 1.2MP front camera.

On the other hand, Nexus 4 sports an 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front camera for videocalling.

Storage: Lumia 920 has 32GB internal memory and 1GB RAM. Further, the Nokia WP8 handset also will come with a 7GB of free Microsoft SkyDrive storage, which is common for all Microsoft phones, whereas, Nexus 4 comes with 2GB RAM and 8GB/16GB internal storage.

However, both Lumia 920 and Nexus 4 smartphones lack a micro SD card slot for additional memory support.

Connectivity: Talking about connectivity, both the smartphones have all the important and latest features including NFC, wireless charging, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and micro USB 2.0.

Battery: Lumia 920 is equipped with a 2,000 mAh BP-4GW battery and Nexus 4 has a 2,100 mAh Li-Po battery with 15.3 hours of talk time and standby of 390 hours.

Price: While the official price of Lumia 920 and Nexus 4 are not confirmed by the companies, the handsets are expected by analysts to retail in India at Rs 34,000 and Rs 20,000 approximately. 

Verdict

Both Nokia Lumia 920 and LG Nexus 4 are high-end smartphones with really impressive and breath-taking features including advanced connectivity aspects and fresh new versions of the rival platforms.

If the processor spec is not the main concern, Lumia 920 with better camera performance, glove-friendly touchscreen support and increased internal storage could be a better option.

On the other hand, for those concerned on a quad core processor, larger display real estate and a lightweight handset, Nexus 4 could be a good choice.

However, both the handsets are powered by different platforms – Windows Phone 8 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, hence, they will offer distinguished software features and user experience. Therefore, the final buying decision depends on which OS the consumers like to have and on the pricing of the handset.
