Apple not only took the wraps off the iPad Mini and MacBook Pro with Retina Display at the October 23 media event, but also introduced a new line of iMacs, eighth generation of its flagship desktop line.
Though it is similar to its predecessor in terms of design, the big departure is its thickness as the new iMac is 5 mm thin at its edge. Apple has managed to achieve such a thin profile for the new iMac range by ditching the optical drive. The display is laminated directly to the glass as in the case of the iPhone 5 and MacBook Pro with Retina display.
During the launch, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketingsaid, “With a stunning design, brilliant display and faster performance, we’ve made the world’s leading all-in-one desktop computer better in every way. The all-new iMac is unbelievably thin, yet packs an incredible amount of performance and technology into our most innovative desktop.”
Specifications
The iMac will come in two variants – 27 inch LED IPS display with 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and 21.5 inch LED IPS display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution both with a full lamination design with 75% reduced reflection.
The new iMac features third generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processors that can be upgraded to Core i7 accompanied with faster NVIDIA GeForce processor, 8GB of 1600MHz memory and a 1TB hard drive.
Apple has also announced a brand new form of storage for the iMac dubbed as Fusion Drive, which fuses a 128GB SSD hard drive along with a 1TB or 3TB HDD to increase the speed and efficiency of the iMac’s hard drive. Moreover, the device has a micro SD card slot, four USB 3 ports and two Thunderbolt ports.
Price & Availability
The base 21.5 inch iMac is priced starting at Rs 85,900 and ships in November, whereas the base 27 inch model is priced at Rs 99,900 and ships in December.
